Capstone Project
Alpine Shield Stretcher

Project context

The Problem is that available emergency and rescue solutions are patrollers at nearby snow resorts. Depending on the resort, patrols will need the authorisation to save someone in the backcountry. Rescue helicopters are good at what they do but are expensive to run, and the participant will pay a fee for the rescue.

The solution developed was an inexpensive portable backpack stretcher, where the user can carry around their back and be used as a shield from fall impact and cover their travel gear on the move.

This device is lightweight, so it doesn’t hinder your travel from the backcountry and is portable, so when an accident does happen, you can be first to respond for first aid and support your friend or teammate.

Customers/participants who go to these extreme terrains can use a device for their safety, not the patrollers.

Stretchers in the market are significant and not practical to use when skiing down a slope.

Avalanche gear is recommended for travelling in these areas, but not actual rescue gear. On the other hand, Patrollers have this to be part of their job, but in some cases, time and location can be factors for people having a bad experience at the snow as experience is one big reason to go the backcountry. An opportunity for everyone who is travelling can provide care before it arrives. To still have a strong experience even when an accident happens.

The SAS is a portable backpack stretcher designed to support rescue missions; the SAS is a multi-function/dedicated rucksack for use in the high country. Owning one will ease excellent support for the patient and movability when sloping down. The Shield provides superior deployment characteristics enabling a full-length stretcher to be quickly effective when trouble occurs with your friends or teammates.

Once it's folded into stretcher mode, the accident victim is secured within the structurally rigid form and carefully transferred by coasting over the snow to the nearest first-aid post. Designed for newly minded backcountry skiers, likely heading out with limited safety gear or training, the value of Shield comes to the fore. Using high-quality materials for strength and durability on acting forces for impact and utilising lightweight benefits won't affect your skiing experience.
